The Best AI Coding Agents in 2026

1. In your editor

Cursor is an AI-first editor that started as a VS Code fork. Cursor 3 (April 2026) added a dedicated Agents Window for running multiple background agents, and it lets you switch between models from several providers.

GitHub Copilot lives inside the editors many teams already use and connects tightly with GitHub issues and pull requests. It's the lowest-friction choice if your company is already on GitHub.

Devin Desktop is the new name (since June 2026) for the Windsurf IDE, now owned by Cognition. It puts an Agent Command Center at the front while keeping the full IDE.

2. In your terminal

Claude Code is Anthropic's terminal-first agent. It reads your repo, runs commands, and asks for permission before editing files or running commands by default. It's popular for large refactors and long multi-step tasks.

OpenAI Codex is OpenAI's coding agent, available as a CLI and as a cloud agent that works on tasks in parallel.

3. Fully autonomous

Devin from Cognition runs long tasks on its own cloud machine and reports back, which suits well-scoped tickets you want to hand off entirely.

4. Prompt-to-app builders
